Funeral services for the late Helry McDowell of Helena will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 21, 2013 at New Haven Missionary Baptist Church. Rev. Amos Newell will officiate.
Visitation will be noon to 5 p.m. Friday, Sept. 20 in the Stephens Funeral Home Chapel.
Internment will be in New Zion Cemetery.
On a cozy fall day, Jan. 4, 1929 in Centerville, Miss. a handsome vibrant young man was born by the name of Helry McDowell to the late Jack McDowell and Ella Cage.
Helry was the seventh child born into the McDowell family. He accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior at an early age.
Helry received his education in the Coahoma County School District. He later moved to St. Louis Mo. where he met and married Lela Stewart in 1971.
He worked and gave faithful and dedicated services to General Motors for many of year before retiring. Helry and his family then relocated to Helena, where he worked as a driver delivering medical supplies to local businesses.
Helry rededicated his life to Christ and joined St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church. Helry departed this earthly life on Thursday Sept. 12, 2013 peacefully at his home in Helena.
Helry is preceded in death by his parents Jack and Ella McDowell, six brothers, Sylvester, Charles, Jack, Henry, Willis and Wallace McDowell and a sister, Mary Rose McDowell.
He leaves to cherish his precious memory, his son Dave (Edna) McDowell of Clarksdale, Miss.; a stepdaughter, Pattie Dunlap; a grandson, Edmond Jackson both of St. Louis; a sister, Ora Lee of Metairie, La.; a brother, Albert McDowell of San Francisco, Calif.; a special niece, Linda (James) McDowell of Oxford, Miss.; two special nephews, Marvin McDowell of Robersonville, Miss. and Johnelle McDowell of Chicago, Ill.; three great-grandchildren; a great-great grandchild and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends who will miss him dearly.
Stephens Funeral Home is in charge of the services.
