  • Fans were not disappointed by the performance of the Central High School Cougars during the home opener at Cad Polk Stadium Friday evening. The Cougar offense put on an offensive exhibition equal to almost any Fourth of July fireworks display as they literally blew away their Delta rivals, the Marianna Cougars 47-8. Leading the scoring parade was running back Keith Hayes with a pair of TD runs of 1 and 47 yards. Anthony Lewis also scored a pair of touchdowns, one coming on a 40-yard pass from quarterback Curley Brewer and another on a 10-yard run. Sandy Wright added a 10-yard run and also hauled in a 2-point conversion pass. Devonte Howard chipped in with a 15-yard run. Central led 41-0 at the half – the same score by which the Cougars defeated the Trojans a year ago. The clock rolled the entire second half as the Mercy Rule kicked in. Central added a 23-yard scoring run in the third quarter. It was their only score of their five, second half possessions. Marianna did not get on the scoreboard until late in the fourth quarter. On defense, Markease Williams picked off a pass for the Cougars. During the course of the contest, Coach Russell Smith gave as many players as possible an opportunity to play. Friday night, Central, 1-1, hosts Wynne, 1-1. The Yellowjackets are coming off a 52-28 victory over Vilonia Friday night.
