  • Helena Museum was among 19 organizations that received a Small Arkansas Museum grant. The grants of $2,632 for each institution were announced during a ceremony at Trapnall Hall, 423 East Capitol Avenue in Little Rock. Presenting the grants were Martha Miller, director of the Department of Arkansas Heritage, Mark Christ, chairman of the board of the Arkansas Humanities Council, and Paul Austin, executive director of the Arkansas Humanities Council. This is the fourth year that the agencies have partnered to fund and administer the grant program targeted at small Arkansas museums. “There is so much rich history in every corner of the state, and so many small museums with wonderful volunteers, who work to tell their local stories,” said Miller. “We are delighted that these grants can help support those endeavors.” Twenty-two organizations applied for the grants, Austin indicated. "Local history is the bedrock of the humanities, and we are very pleased to be able to offer support to the small Arkansas museums in their efforts to promote and protect their local histories. Administering this program is a real boost for our work across the state, and we are proud to be a part of the Small Museums Project," he said. To be eligible for the grants, applicants had to be non-profit museums or historical societies with annual operating budgets of up to $250,000 and at least one staff person, either paid or unpaid. Staff time must be devoted primarily to the care of the museum and its collections, and the museum must be open to the public at least 90 days per year. The deadline for applications for the next funding cycle is May 1, 2014. For more information on the grant process, contact the Arkansas Humanities Council at (501) 320-5761.
