  • Beginning Wednesday, September 4, the first in a series of workshops for parents of children with special needs will be held for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at UAMS East. The workshops are free and lunch and babysitting will be provided. Betty Willis, director of special education in the Helena-West Helena School District, will introduce a, Legal Aid of Arkansas attorney who will present an overview of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. IDEA applies to all children with special needs from birth through age 21. According to Judy Carroll of Arc of Arkansas, an advocacy group that provides services and support to people with disabilities and their families, speakers will help parents through the “daunting process” of understanding the law, the rights it conveys, its practical application and the ways parents can and should be involved in shaping their special child's educational plans. “The workshop is sponsored by the Arc of Arkansas and is funded by a grant from the Arkansas Governor's Developmental Disabilities Council,” stated Carroll. Future workshops will feature such topics as early intervention strategies, techniques for working with children who have difficult behaviors, effective advocacy approaches for parent participation in planning meetings and issues surrounding the transition from school-age to adult life.
