Friday night, the DeSoto Thunderbirds hosted a 4-team jamboree at Sam Howe Field.
Call it a preseason scrimmage. Call it a tune up under game conditions but it all boiled down to being a dress rehearsal for opening night that gets underway for Mississippi Private School Association members this coming Friday evening.
Besides the T-Birds, the other squads participating in the annual jamboree were West Memphis Christian, Tunica Academy and Lee Academy Marianna.
Each team got in three 20-minute quarters of action that were played non-stop with the exception of one time out per session. There was no kicking in the contest. Play began the ball at its own 35 and maintained possession until they ran out of downs, turned the ball over or put the ball in the end zone.
DeSoto looked sharp in its first two quarters of action. Defensively, they held West Memphis Christian scoreless for the entire 20-minute session. The T-Birds got a break late in the quarter when the Black Knights were called for pass interference. With no time left on the clock – a quarter cannot end on a defensive penalty – Zac Manning hooked up with Tyler Warfield for the score.
The Thunderbirds managed to run the ball almost at will against the Lee Academy Cougars. DeSoto generated touchdowns by Reed St. Columbia, Tucker VonKanel and Griffin Christine.
DeSoto opens the regular season this Friday night (August 23) when they host the Marvell Academy Eagles in an eight-man contest. Game time is 7 p.m.
