  • Only one school board seat will be contested in the upcoming Sept. 17 school elections according to information obtained from the Phillips County Clerk's Office.
The lone race will be in the Barton-Lexa School District where Evelyn Jackson Thomas will challenge Rosetta Ross Davis. Davis resigned from the school board earlier this year and the board appointed Leon Phillips on June 25 to fill the vacated Zone 1 post.
Davis decided to run for her old slot.
Former board president Travis Williams resigned his seat on May 21 to take a teaching position in the district. The board appointed Charles Ward to fill that void. No one filed to fill that seat in the September election.
Candidates in the county's other districts are all incumbents and have no challengers. The Helena-West Helena School District is still under state control and does not elect school board members.
The deadline to register to vote in the school elections is Monday, August 19. If a runoff is required that election will be held October 8. The deadline to register to vote in the runoff election is Sept. 9.
