  • Those looking for a good, fun form of exercise may find that tap dancing is a great way to get healthy and stay in shape. This fall, Phillips Community College of the University of Arkansas (PCCUA) is introducing a boys tap class as well as a tap class for adults. Taught by Melissa Keirsey, the classes will meet for 12 weeks on Thursday evenings from Aug. 29 - Nov. 14. The boys tap class (ages 7-14) will meet from 5-6 p.m., while the adult tap class (ages 18 & up) will meet from 6-7 p.m. Wandra Williams, PCCUA Community Service Director, says no dance experience is required for these classes, adding that the steps are simple and very easy to learn. The only thing needed is a good pair of tap shoes, which can be borrowed or purchased new online or at a dance store. “These classes will provide fun opportunities to get together with others and exercise,” she said. Health and fitness experts say it takes only 20 minutes of tap dancing per day, three times a week, to get into shape. Once participants get the hang of tap dancing, they will find that is it a fun cardiovascular activity to do alone, with a partner, or with a group. Keirsey has taught dance at Phillips College for nine years. The cost of each 12-week course is $65 per semester. Limited slots are available. To register or for more information, stop by the college or call Judy Bernard at 338-6474, ext. 1181, or Williams at 816-1210.
