Business was light at Thursday night's monthly meeting of the Helena-West Helena Historic District Commission. During the brief session, the commission considered two applications for Certificates of Appropriateness on properties owned by Matt Inman. The applications were for facade improvements on properties at 421 and 423 Cherry Street. “All exterior changes to buildings within the historic district are to be approved by the Commission to ensure that they are 'appropriate' for the district,” commented Paula Oliver, director of communications for the Delta Cultural Center. “This included new paint colors, signage, awnings and structural changes.” The Commission approved Inman's applications. “The Commission can expect additional applications in the future since Main Street Helena has received additional grant money,” added Oliver. Ordinance No. 3 of the newly merge city of Helena-West Helena established the historic district commission back in 2006. The new commission replaced the Helena Historic District established in 1987 but dissolved when Helena and West Helena merged. The mayor appoints the nine-member commission with each commissioner serving three-year terms. Current members of the historic district commission are: Debra Smith, chairman; Robin Bryant, Loistyne Burrell, Cathy Campbell, Dana Chadwick, Sam Elardo, Marcus Nelson, Billy Smith and Luke VanDeWalle.
