  • On July 2, the Marvell Public Library invited local children to come celebrate America's 237th birthday. To begin the celebration, Abbey Hamilton presented a large American flag as everyone recited the Pledge of Allegiance. Then, the children and accompanying adults marched around the inside of the District Courtroom waving American flags and singing, “You're a Grand Old Flag.” Mary Ned Foster as Uncle Sam explained to the children just who Uncle Sam is and then talked about the composition of the Stars and Stripes before the children colored their own pictures of the flag. Librarian Edwynne Story told the story “Ring for Liberty” by Virginia Parsons, introducing the group to the Liberty Bell and the Declaration of Independence. The children also made necklaces on a red or blue string. In the center of each necklace was a small, colorful American flag surrounded by bright red and blue beads in addition to white beads on each, which had the individual letters “U”, “S” and “A.” “Happy Birthday America” was sung just before Titus Skaggs blew out the candles on the cake. Everyone partook of the cake that looked like Old Glory and drank some lemonade. Thirty children enjoyed an hour of patriotic fun while learning about our country's early history.
