  • The 1st annual Helena Freedom Festival made a big splash over the weekend. According to Sharon Martin, community advocate and marketing director of Helena Regional Medical Center. Children of all ages enjoyed activities like tug-a-rope, capture the flag, the balloon relay, the watermelon crawl, the egg toss and the ultimate Slip-N-Slide complete with a jumbo sprayer. Children also took part in ace painting while gathered under the shade of tents and enjoyed the bubble fun. Cool bottles of water were provided along with popsicles, and all the left over watermelon you could eat. Civil war advocates were on sight for canon loading lesson for the youngsters and photos. The big blow up water slide was a big hit as children of all ages waited in line to cool off. The Festival was capped off with a hotdog-eating contest for the youngsters and musical entertainment for the big kids at heart at the Wild Hog Saloon where Phillip Stackhouse and Rodge and the Dirt Road Republic wrapped up the day's events. Approximately 200 attended the event.
