On Friday June 28, shortly before noon, a shooting took place in the 1100 and 1200 blocks of Perry Street as citizens looked on and took cover. When the Helena-West Helena Police Department arrived, residents reported that shots were fired from a newer model black Kia that sped away from the scene, heading east on Perry Street and into oncoming traffic.
The H-WHPD Criminal Investigations Division reported that no one was injured during the incident.
The H-WHPD later learned that Anthony Fonzie was driving the car with Deandre Green and Kajavis Oneal as passengers. The police subsequently took Green into custody in the 200 block of North Third Street while Fonzie and Oneal were taken into custody in the area of Melton.
It was believed that Fonzie went home to hide the guns allegedly used in the shooting. The Helena-West Helena CID obtained a warrant and conducted a search of the house and the black Kia and discovered a large amount of cash, cocaine and a pistol.
The CID reported that 140 grams of crack cocaine with an approximate street value of almost $15,000 and approximately $13,000 in cash were discovered in the house.
As a result of the shooting, Green, Fonzie and Oneal were arrested and charged with unlawful discharge of a firearm from a vehicle, aggravated assault, unauthorized use of another person's to facilitate certain crimes, and engaging in violent criminal group activity.
Fonzie also was charged with possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver, possession of drug paraphernalia, and possession of firearms by certain persons.
Bond was set in the amount of $100,000 for all three arrested. Fonzie is in custody at the Brickeys Unit. Green and Oneal were transported to Ashely County.
