On the evening of June 7, 2013, the angel of death came and sealed the lips of our beloved Vannie Lee Alexander and the memories we have of her will always be dear to our hearts. Vannie was born to the union of Mathis and Mandy Terry on May 15, 1916 in Coffeeville, Miss., six months later the family relocated to Arkansas. Vannie confessed Christ as her Lord and Savior at an early age. In 1927, she joined Point Pleasant Church and later joined True Vine Church in 1945. She sung for many years in the senior choir. On Oct.15, 1932 Vannie gave birth to her only child, James Carter. She was united in holy matrimony to the late Willie Alexander in 1937. Vannie worked all her adult life – soup kitchens, Chicago Mill and Bobby Brooks Sportswear until she retired. She was a talker who never met a stranger. She loved the Lord with all her heart. She loved her church family. She was a die-hard baseball fan – Red Sox. She is preceded in death by her son, James Carter, her parents, brothers, Ned and Eddie Terry and Leroy Lockridge, sisters, Annie, Cannie, Florene, Lillie Mae and Baby Rose. She leaves to cherish her memory, a granddaughter, Barbara Carter Hayes of Helena, Stephanie Carter of Omaha Neb.; grandson, Robert Carter of Little Rock, Julius Carter of Helena, Terry, Garry and Rico Carter, all of Chicago Ill.; and a host of great-grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nephews, nieces, other relatives, friends, and her church family. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, June 14 in the Jackson – Highley Funeral Home Chapel. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, June 15 at True Vine Church. Interment will follow immediately at Jackson Memorial Cemetery in the Southland community.
