Helena-West Helena residents are still in shock following a Wednesday evening accident that claimed the life of a seven-year-old girl. Mykayla Hawkins was struck by a truck driven by Arthur English, who is described by law enforcement officials as in his late 70s, an amputee and diabetic on medication who probably should not have been driving. According to an Arkansas State Police Report Hawkins was riding her bike in the westbound traffic lane in the area of Sam and Park streets when the accident occurred. The report lists 5:50 p.m. as the time of the incident. English was not injured and called 911. English has been charged with negligent homicide and inattentive driving, both according to officials are misdemeanors. He must face a judge and could be sentenced to some jail time. Hawkins was a first grader at KIPP Elementary. Balloons and a stuffed bear were placed at the spot where the child was struck. Cpl. Chris Hellums of the Helena-West Helena Police Department was the investigating officer.
