Elma Mallory Chaffin passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 8, 2013 surrounded by her loving family. She was born on April 12,1936 in Memphis to Ned and Elizabeth Scott Mallory. Raised in Forrest City, she attended Forrest City High School and Mississippi State College for Women, before later graduating proudly with honors as a "non-traditional" student with a BA in education from Arkansas State University. She began to teach 2nd grade at Marvell Elementary in 1993. She loved encouraging her students and they loved her. Her teaching career was shortened by her fierce battle with cancer. Through her strength of will and zest for life, she beat all odds conquering her cancer diagnosis 19 years ago. Elma was an involved member of the Marianna community. She was active in her church and showed great enthusiasm for the Bible as a Sunday School teacher. She was an avid reader and gardener. She truly enjoyed the company of her dear friends and remained active in both P.E.O. and bridge club. Elma will be treasured in memory as a strong Southern woman, a doting wife and loving mother to all her children, daughters to great grand. She leaves her loving and dedicated husband of 59 years, Martin Chaffin; her daughters, Elizabeth Gibson (Tim) and Mallory Chaffin of Athens, Ga.; grandchildren, Laura Gibson Smith (Wilson) and Annabelle Sachs and great-granddaughter Vera Elizabeth Smith; her sister, Mary Ned Foster (Winston); nephew Jay Van Dover (Tracey) and niece, Mallory Van Dover (Brian Cato); and a host of beautiful loving family. A memorial service will be held at The First United Methodist Church in Marianna at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 11. Roller Citizens Funeral Home in Marianna will provide arrangements. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be given in Elma's honor to: The First United Methodist Church Of Marianna, 59 South Poplar, Marianna, AR 72360.
