The benefits that the role of regular exercise plays in preventing many chronic health conditions are well documented. With a grant from the Helena Health Foundation, Phillips Community College has expanded and improved its Fitness Center to enhance its fitness program for students and members.
PCCUA has bought new workout equipment for the center. Equipment upgrades include three treadmills, one ARC trainer, one recumbent bicycle, bench/shoulder press weight machine, leg press/toe raise weight machine, leg extension/leg curl weight machine, and lat pull-down/low row weight machine. Taking out a wall and expanding into a room, which had previously been used as a ladies' shower/locker room, enlarged the center. That room is now dedicated to weight machines and free weights, and a smaller area in between has been transformed into a media room for video workouts.
The PCCUA fitness center offers a wide range of workout equipment including elliptical machines, treadmills, recumbent bikes, upright bikes, a rowing machine, stair climbers, ARC trainer, spinning bikes, weight machines, free weights, dumbbells, stability balls, kettle bells, and weighted balls. The revamped center features additional wall-mounted mirrors to enable trainers and users to monitor technique and posture for safe and effective exercise.
Fitness Center Director Carolyn Willingham said joining a gym is considered to be one of the best ways to stay healthy and in shape. Exercising at home can get boring, which may lead to inconsistent workouts or no workout at all, she added. The wide range of fitness center equipment allows participants to do a variety of exercises and workouts. She noted that it is next to impossible for someone to afford the broad range of workout equipment for a workout session at home, compared to what's available at a gym.
“The best way to maintain a regular workout routine is to join a fitness center,” Willingham said. “The PCCUA Fitness Center is a flexible and affordable option for people who want to take advantage of all that it offers. We are very excited about our remodeling and the additions to the facility, and we invited the community to come see all that we have to offer now.”
She said joining a fitness center could motivate individuals to work out regularly, which helps them stay fit and healthy. Paying for a gym membership provides incentive for members to come and work out so that they won't feel their money is wasted.
PCCUA Fitness Center members also have access to the gymnasium for additional activities. When the gym is not in use for classes, members are free to use the facility for basketball, badminton, pickleball, table tennis, and volleyball.
