Sonny Burgess, a regular participant in the annual Arkansas Delta Rockabilly Festival, called this year's lineup “the best rockabilly lineup I've ever seen.”
The third annual two-day event, scheduled May 10-11, is scheduled to get underway this Friday. Gates will open at 2:30 p.m. and the music will get underway at 3 p.m.
Ben “Cooter” Jones and Cooter's Garage Band will headline the first day of the rockabilly festival. Jones, best known for his role as Cooter Davenport on CBS's “Dukes of Hazards” series in the 1980s, will cruise into Helena. On the lam from Sheriff Roscoe P. Coltrane, Cooter will bring the famous General Lee (Dodge Charger) to town with him. It will be available for photos throughout the day.
Festival activities actually begin Friday morning with the annual Ray Galloway Golf Tournament.
Friday's lineup features Brandon Cunning and the Stunning Cunning Band, C.W. Gatlin, Sleepy LeBeef, The Cate Brothers as well as Cooter's Garage Band.
On Saturday, the music will begin at 11 a.m. and will include this lineup: Stan Perkins and D.J. Fontana, Reba Russell, W.S. Holland, Ace Cannon, Linda Gail Lewis, Wanda Jackson, Travis Wammack and The Kentucky Headhunters, along with Sonny Burgess and The Legendary Pacers. Burgess was one of the original rock and roll recording artists for Sun Studio Records.
Children under 12 will be admitted free. Tickets can be bought online at www.deltarockabillyfest.com or on the day of the festival. The American Music Museum, a 501c3 nonprofit, is producing the event.
