  • Police have taken three more suspects into custody in connection with the deadly Boston Marathon bombings, which killed three people and injured more than 260. Two of the men were college friends of alleged perpetrator Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, The Associated Press reports.
The suspects did not help Dzhokhar and his brother Tamerlan (who was killed in a firefight with police days after the attack) carry out the bombings, but rather are thought to have helped Dzhokhar after the fact, Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick told the AP.
Dzhokhar Tsarnaev claims brother masterminded Boston Marathon bombings
Two of the suspects, Azamat Tazhayakov and Dias Kadyrbayev, both 19, reportedly emigrated to the U.S. from Kazakhstan and attended the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth with Dzhokhar Tsarnaev. They were charged Wednesday with conspiracy to obstruct justice by plotting to dispose of a laptop computer and a backpack containing fireworks belonging to bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, according to The Boston Globe. The AP reports that Tazhayakov and Kadyrbayev have been in jail for more than a week for allegedly violating their student visas, according to the AP.
The third suspect, Robel Phillipos, also 19, was charged with making false statements to law enforcement officials in a terrorism investigation, the Globe reports.
Tazhayakov and Kadyrbayev face up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine. Phillipos faces up to eight years and a $250,000 fine, prosecutors said.
Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, who was taken into custody on April 19, remains hospitalized but has been responding to investigators' questions, according to reports.
Tamerlan Tsarnaev's relatives told the AP they will claim his body from the medical examiner's office in Massachusetts. His cause of death has been determined but will not be made public until his body has been claimed, the AP reports.
