It was a very happy Saturday for Phillips County 4-H, the weather was perfect and everyone had loads of fun at the 2013 Broiler Barbecue Contest held at the Phillips County Extension Office on April 20. There were seven contestants ranging from ages 9 to 15.
The 4-Hers had the opportunity to attend two workshops last week, where they learned how to select a grill, start and maintain the fire, prepare and cook the meat, and how to check the meat for doneness. During the contest, they were judged based on how well they practiced these techniques. Participants were also judged on cleanliness of equipment, properly and safely starting their fire, maintaining proper heat throughout the cooking period and overall appearance and taste of finished product.
The majority of the contestants were first time grillers, and the judges were amazed at the outcome. However, they had to choose the top five scorers to compete in the district competition.
The top five scorers included: Tashawna Brassell (1st place), Jalen Phillips (2nd place), Adam Brown (3rd place), Oxavia Franklin (4th place) and Akizzea Turman (5th place). These 4-Hers will represent Phillips County in the Delta District Poultry Barbecue Contest that will be held at the Arkansas State Fairgrounds in Little Rock on May 4.
Destiny Tate and KyReunna Franklin were right behind the top five scores and were awarded participation ribbons. All of the contestants did an excellent job and the Phillips County 4-H staff was very proud.
