The Helena-West Helena Police Department reported Wednesday that an arrest has been made in connection with the murder of a local restaurant owner. Michael Washington was shot 8 or 9 times during what appeared to be a robbery at his restaurant, Burger World and More on the evening of Jan. 5. Police Chief Uless Wallace reported that they currently have one of three suspects in custody after 20-year-old Joseph Henry of Helena-West Helena reportedly confessed to the murder on tape during a polygraph test in Little Rock. According to Wallace, Henry is known to be associated with the South Beach Gang. He will be charged with capital murder. “We were lucky to have had an anonymous informant confide to our dispatcher about some information pertaining to the murder of Washington and from there we were able to make the proper contacts and obtain enough information for a polygraph test,” reported Wallace. “We really want to thank the community for their help that led to the arrest. Without their support and cooperation, justice could not have been served,” Wallace added. Washington had been in business at the corner of Missouri and Columbia streets for a number of years and was well known and respected in that area of the community. Washington was known throughout Helena-West Helena for providing annual Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners to the needy.
