  • The Phillips County Sheriff's Office confirmed that they have identified the body found by a fisherman in the Mississippi River last week. Sheriff Deputy Neal Byrd confirmed that the remains were indentified to be Vernon Bumgarner, a 60-year-old barge captain who went missing in January after falling overboard. Action news 5 reported that the U.S. Coast Guard joined in the search for the missing captain, complete with helicopters and boats. Phillip's County Sheriff Office confirmed that a commercial fisherman and his son found Bumgarner as they were setting out nets in the river on the afternoon of March 12th. Action news 5 reported that at the time the body was carrying no identification, and had only tennis shoes and socks, no clothes. Bumgarner's family told Action News 5 that he was a veteran with decades of experience. "He's been out on the water since he got out of the Navy," said his sister, Susan Santiago in January. According to the sheriff's office, Bumgarner was identified by dental records.
