  • March is National Red Cross Month. In conjunction with that designation, there will be a community blood drive Tuesday, March 19 from 1 to 6 p.m. at Phillips Community College, 1000 Campus Drive in Helena-West Helena. Just like a hospital ER, the Red Cross needs to be prepared to respond to patient needs 24-7. Blood drives, like the one being conducted right here in Phillips County, makes it possible for the Red Cross to help people, prepare and respond to all types of emergencies. The generous support of blood donors helps ensure that all patients have the blood supplies they need, no matter when or where. Blood transfusions are needed on a regular basis. According to a Red Cross press release, a Red Cross served hospital ordered 50 units of red blood cells and 50 units of plasma for a patient having a liver transplant. Thanks to dependable Red Cross donors, the needed blood products were available. If you wish to donate blood, simply call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or visit redcrossblood.org to make an appointment or obtain more information. All blood types are needed. At the blood drive, a blood donor card or driver's license and two other forms of identification are required at check-in. Persons 17 years old (16 with parental consent in some states), weigh at least 110 pounds and in general good health are eligible to donate. High school students and donors 18 or younger must meet certain height and weight requirements. The American Red Cross is a not-for-profit organization shelters, feeds and provides emotional support to disasters. It also teaches life-saving skills, provides international humanitarian aid and supports military members and their families. Besides donating blood, there are other ways to help the Red Cross including volunteering, taking a class or making a financial donation.
