Phillips County's annual Spelling Bee was held recently at the Malco Theater in Helena.
Five schools were represented this year and they included: Barton Elementary, Barton Junior High, DeSoto, Helena-West Helena, KIPP and Marvell Academy. Students participating in the bee were: Kelly Bloesch, Courtney Brocato, Jakourius Corbin, Camille Culp, Destiny Duncan, John Battle-Hamrac, Zykaria Hubbard, Jahron King, Mary Clair Stewart, Kenosha Thomas, Malcolm Vincent, Marley Vincent, Ethan Ward, Tyneshia Watson, Megan Wilkison, Katherine Wright and D'Andreya Young.
Emily Johnson served as the enunciator. The judges were Andrew Yoder, Linda English and Minnie Thomas.
All participants received certificates. First, second and third place winners received cash prizes and spelling medals. Katherine Wright won first place, Marley Vincent won second place and John-Battle Hamrac won third place.
As winner of the Phillips County Spelling Bee, Katherine will attend the Mid-South Spelling bee, sponsored by the Commercial Appeal, at the Al Chymia Shrine Center in Memphis on March 2. The winner of that bee earns the right to attend the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington in May.
