  • Phillips County residents are invited to attend a town hall session on Feb. 28 to voice their opinions concerning local growth opportunities for Phillips County. A “Voice of the Community” town hall session will take from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at the UAMS East (Delta AHEC) building according to a press release issued by Kimberly Clement, community development officer for Southern Bancorp Community Partners. This meeting is part of reNEW East Arkansas, a strategic planning initiative designed to increase development opportunities and improve quality of life in eastern Arkansas. The East Arkansas Planning and Development District, which serves 12 counties in the Delta, launched reNEW East Arkansas after successfully obtaining a $2.6 million grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) in November 2011. According to Clement's press release, a steering committee comprised of a cross-section of community leaders will gather for two days, Feb. 28 and March 4 in Helena-West Helena for “Plan Week,” which will result in a comprehensive strategic plan for the county. The “Voice of the Community” session will give citizens a chance to provide key input to steering committee members on the direction they would like to see their community grow. “This is an important opportunity for Phillips County,” said Doug Friedlander, steering committee chair for Southern Bancorp Community Partners' Delta Bridge Project and executive director of the Phillips County Chamber of Commerce. “Plan Week and the 'Voice of Community' session will prepare Phillips County to grow economically and be a more livable community. This planning session is the first step of an on-going process to develop and implement strategies that will be identified throughout the planning process. We are excited about partnering with East Arkansas Planning and Development District on this crucial project.” For more information on the “Voice of the Community” session, please call 870-338-8327. EAPDD is a non-profit regional planning and development agency serving a 12-county area of East Arkansas. The District's purpose is to promote and support economic development of the region by providing technical assistance to the cities, counties, businesses, and other development organizations and by networking extensively with state and federal resource agencies. Southern Bancorp Community Partners is a nonprofit affiliate of Southern Bancorp, one of America's largest rural development banks. SBCP manages the Delta Bridge Project, a comprehensive community-led development initiative guided by a Strategic Community Plan. The Delta Bridge Project initiative has garnered national attention over the past six years and generated over $88 million of support for projects in Phillips County.
