Last Monday, Feb. 4, Cedric Mitchell, Clinton Ward, Justin Brown and Eddie Richardson Jr. entered guilty pleas in connection with July 4, 2011 shooting death of Crystal Rattler and the shooting of 3 children following a family gathering at 918 Ohio St. in Helena-West Helena.
Police Chief Uless Wallace reported that Mitchell, Ward, Brown and Richardson pled guilty to a reduced charge of murder in the second degree and battery in the first degree for which they received 20 years for the murder and five years for the battery. The sentences are to run concurrently.
Wallace stated that the H-WHPD investigation revealed that Mitchell, Ward, Brown and Richardson hid in the darkness across the street from the Ohio Street address armed with an AK-47 assault rifle, a 9mm pistol and a 22- caliber pistol and fired shots toward the Rattlers residence.
During the shooting, they shot and killed the 22-year-old Rattler. A 10-year- old was shot in the left thigh; a seven-year-old- was shot in the left thigh and another seven-year-old was shot in the right thigh. The bullet went through to his left thigh where it exited.
The children have since recovered from their physical injuries but still struggle with emotional al scaring of being shot said Wallace.
The investigators assigned to this case were Lt. Dennis Cox, Sgt. Thomas Bivens and Sgt. Michael Thomas who worked diligently to solve this case and bring Mitchell, Ward, Brown and Richardson before the courts to answer for their senseless violence that claimed the life of Rattler and injured three children, added Wallace.
