Just like Christmas, tax day has a way of sneaking up on you. Experts say this year things could be a little more “taxing” than usual.
That's why on Super Saturday, Feb. 9 free income tax services will be made available for income-eligible families and individuals in Helena-West Helena at Volunteer Income Tax Assistance sites from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
IRS-certified volunteers will prepare electronic tax returns for residents with an annual earned income of $51,000 or less. Southern Bancorp and Southern Bancorp Community Partners are sponsoring the tax preparation service. The service will be available through April 15.
The volunteers also will provide facts about Earned Income Tax Credit, the Child Tax Credit and other information.
At the same time, those interested in attending college can complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid. The FAFSA requires a lot of the same documentation needed to file your taxes. This can be done while taxes are being prepared.
The deadline to file FAFSA forms in Arkansas is June 1. Help with FAFSA is also available during College Goal Day, which is scheduled Feb. 20. For more information visit http://www.aarcollegegoalsunday.org/.
At the VITA site in Helena-West Helena, taxpayers can also obtain information concerning programs that can assist with buying a home, developing a small business, repairing your credit and financing college.
More than 2,000 taxpayers filed their taxes at Southern VITA sites. The qualifiers received a combined total of nearly $5million in refunds and tax credits.
