Around 7:29 p.m. Friday evening, police and Criminal Investigation Division responded to a fatal accident on York and Columbia streets as the result of a hit and run. Eddie Richardson Sr. of Helena was pronounced dead after being struck by a vehicle while walking south on Columbia. According to Helena-West Helena Police Chief Uless Wallace, a young man, also traveling on Columbia, turned left unto York Street striking Richardson. Richardson was reported dead at the scene and the suspect in custody is reported to have left the scene of the accident only to turn himself in to Wallace. “We currently have the suspect in custody in the Phillips County Jail where he awaiting arraignment with pending charges of leaving the scene of an accident with injuries and vehicular manslaughter. In other news, Wallace reports that CID is working diligently to bring justice and closure to the Michael Washington murder case and explains that they are currently looking at one person of interest. Washington, 40, owner of Burger World, was shot to death at his restaurant on Jan. 5 during an apparent hold up. Wallace wishes to express his gratitude to the community for the calls and the information they have provided in many of their cases and urges them to continue to report any information or suspicious activity.
