Karyn Infield Brown died Jan. 6, 2012 at MD Anderson Cancer Center. Karyn was born in Norfolk, Va. on Sept.16, 1961. She earned an associate's degree in applied science on from Phillips County Community College in 1982 and an associate in arts degree also from PC in 1981. Karyn earned her bachelor of science in education from Arkansas State University on Dec. 20, 1985. Karyn received her masters of Science degree in mathematics in 1987.
Karyn taught mathematics at Central High School in Helena until her marriage to S. Whittington Brown on June 19, 1993. During this time Karyn also was one of the first teachers to work for Teach for America during the summer.
Karyn taught at the Arkansas School for Mathematics and Science during the 1993 -94 school year and Parkview High School from the 1994 to the 1996 School year. While at Parkview, she served as the cheerleader sponsor and her team won several regional competitions.
During the 1996 school year, Karyn taught mathematics at Central High School in Little Rock. She also served as the Mu Alpha Theta sponsor, National Honor Society sponsor, served as the book award coordinator, conducted the annual Tiger Blood Drive for the American Red Cross, and served as the co-chairman of the Math Department.
Karyn was named the Teacher of the Year for the 2003 – 2004 school year. She won the Stephens Award for Excellence in Education in 2000, and she was listed in Who's Who of America's Teachers in 1998, 1999 and 2000.
She leaves by her husband S. Whittington Brown and her daughter, Kaleigh Brown of Little Rock; her sisters, Sharon Sullivan of Memphis, Carol Massey of Greenwood, Miss.; her brother, David Taylor of Savannah, Ga., and numerous cousins, nephews and nieces.
In lieu of flowers, memorials made be made to St. Mark's Episcopal Church, Holt International Children's Services, or Central High School.
