Elizabeth Gilliard, 79, of Helena, went home to join her parents and her Heavenly Father Saturday, Dec. 29, 2012. Elizabeth (Thomas) Perkins Foreman Gilliard was born Aug. 19, 1933 in Phillips County to the late Pearlie (Ware) Thomas Jones Williams and George Thomas. She confessed Christ as her savior at an early age at the New Light M.B. Church where she served for years as Sunday School teacher and choir member. For a short time she was a member of Centennial Baptist Church and diligently served there in many capacities. Elizabeth worked hard for the restoration of the historical church. Upon returning her membership to New Light, she continued to serve there until her illness incapacitated her. She attended Eliza Miller High School and Phillips County Community College, where she pursued an interest in business. On July 24, 1967, she became a member of St. Ruth Chapter Order of the Eastern Star. She was an original founder and 1st charter member of the Order of the Eastern Star-New Bethel Chapter No. 24 in the 1980s and served in the positions of member, elected officer, worthy matron, grand worthy matron, secretary, treasurer and post worthy matron. She was part of the United Supreme Grand Chapter, Grand Mt. Moriah of Little Rock Order of the Eastern Star, New Bethel Chapter No. 324, Heroines of Jericho and Lady Knights Templar. With her involvement in the Order of the Eastern Star organization, she participated in community activities such as fund-raisers, OES provided college scholarships, awards and community service. Elizabeth was preceded in death by her mother, Pearlie (Ware) Jones Thomas Williams, her father, George Thomas, a sister, Alberta Jones Bell, two sons, Curtis Lafayette Perkins and Karl Renard Perkins and husbands, L.P. Perkins, Tommy Foreman and Alexander Gilliard. Elizabeth leaves behind to cherish her memory, a daughter, Charlotte Perkins M. Phillips Od of Dewitt; a son, Kenneth Wayne Perkins Sr. (Mavis) of Westwego, La.; a brother, James Frank Thomas of St. Louis; and a sister, Gloria Williams-Kates (Thomas) of Bogalusa, La.; eight grandchildren; two step-grandsons; a step-granddaughter; five great-grandchildren; a special cousin, MacArthur Sullivan (Geradine) of Helena and Johnnie Mae Thomas of Helena-West Helena; a special friend and neighbor, Nellie Woodridge; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. Visitation will be held 3 to 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 4at Kincaid Funeral Services. The funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 5at New Light M.B. Church. Rev. Edward Wade will officiate.
