  • Two new Arkansas Civil War Sesquicentennial Historical Markers will appear in Phillips County according to Tom Dupree, chairman of the Arkansas Sesquicentennial Commission. Dupree announced the ACWSC's approval of the applications for the markers Monday. The new historical markers will include recruitment of U.S. Colored Troops. This marker will commemorate the enlistment of African American troops into the Union Army at Helena. The second will honor the seven men from Helena who served as generals in the Confederate Army. Civil War Helena and the Helena-West Helena Advertising Promotion Commission are co-sponsoring the markers. The ACWSCS works with local partners to help tell the stories of how the Civil War affected communities around the state. The Commission hopes there will be at least one marker in each of Arkansas' 75 counties by the end of the sesquicentennial commemoration in 2015. For additional information concerning the state's sesquicentennial plans visit www.arkansascivilwar150.com or e-mail acwsc@arkansasheritage.org.
