The Gifted and Talented Program at Barton Elementary hosted their annual Project Fair last week. All students identified for the gifted program in grades 5-6 participated in the fair. Each year the students start the semester choosing a topic of interest. The students choose topics in which they would like to learn more about. Weeks are spent on research and creating a product for their project. Students in the GT program are exposed weekly to the highest levels of critical thinking. As they research the projects of choice, the students are analyzing by comparing and contrasting, evaluating by expressing their opinions on the subject, and synthesizing by creating new products and new ways to present the project. This is the first time many students are required to research information to such a high degree. All of the work is done in the GT classroom and the students have great fun decorating a project board to display what they have learned. They practice their speeches with their GT facilitator and their peers before the big event to build self confidence.
