Helena-West Helena City Council member Eddie Clark proposed a pay incentive to all elected officials and city employees totaling $550 each.
Clark suggested that the city use the property taxes that the city has recently acquired. That motion was quickly shot down when City Clerk Sandy Ramsey explained that the city could not afford the $130,000 incentive package.
“It's true that we have gotten our first installment of the property taxes, however, we couldn't have made payroll without it,” stated Ramsey.
According to Ramsey, there is currently $180,000 in the bank with another payroll to make in a week and a half totaling $140,000, plus non payments that need to be made to gas, oil, grease, and APERS.
“I am afraid of having to borrow again in the middle of December if we cannot find an additional $100,000,” said Ramsey.
“This city is dire straits right now and we do not have the finances to provide Christmas bonuses,” commented Willis. “I will veto this motion if passed because it's the right thing to do.”
The council agreed and denied the motion.
