Funeral services for James Milton Nelson Sr. will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec.1at the Twin City Church of Christ, Highway 49, Helena-West Helena. Rev. Moses Tillman will officiate.
Visitation will be Friday, Nov. 30 at the Midway M.B. Church at Marvell from 5 to 7 p.m. Burial will be in Mt. Moriah Cemetery at Marvell.
James Milton Nelson Sr., affectionately known as “Milton”, was born March 31, 1923 in Marvell to the late William and Sally Nelson. James Milton joined the Midway Baptist Church at an early age and remained a faithful and devoted member until his health failed. He was married to the late Erma Lee Moore in January 1949. To this union 15 children were born.
James Nelson departed this life on Nov. 27, 2012 at his home surrounded by his children, who never left his side.
Milton worked as a community leader, chairman of the Deacon Board of Midway Baptist Church and was choir director for many years. He enjoyed singing and directing the choir and was also a member of the Poplar Grove Male Chorus.
Milton served as a school board member of the Marvell School District and was also a school bus driver for the Marvell School District for many years. He served his country in World War II and was a farmer for many years.
He was a foster grandparent at the Westside Elementary School in Helena until his health failed. He was truly and advocate for Christ and he was a great inspiration and an awesome encourager to his children and all that knew him. His parents and 13 siblings precede him in death.
He leaves to cherish his memory, 17 children, John Wesley Nelson of Detroit, Patricia (Wilbur) Peer of Upper Marlboro, Md., James (Chartuara) Nelson Jr. of Minneapolis, Minn., Arlean (Kelvin) Lane of Little Rock, Diane Nelson of Little Rock, Alvin (Jeanette) Nelson of North Chicago, Aaron, Willie and Dennis Nelson, all of Marvell, Kenneth and Ricky Nelson of Houston, Texas, Shirley Sylvester of Houston, Marilyn (Tracy) Sims of Roundlake, Ill., Dayle (Rodrecous) Wright and Tina (Reginal) Tillman of Memphis, Sharonda (Stephen) Henry of Pine Bluff and Myron (Corrie) of Pine Bluff; two grandchildren whom he raised Catonya Davis of Dallas and Trina Bell of Houston; 86 grandchildren; 65 great-grandchildren; a great-great grandchild; three great-great-great grandchildren; a sister, Arthur Lee Murphy of Kansas City, Kansas; a niece whom he raised with Earlene Nelson Houston of Little Rock; two best friends, Bertha Gist and Revertis Gist of Marvell; and a host of nieces and nephews and other relatives.
His legacy shall live on, Rest in Paradise, James Milton Nelson Sr.
