Offering hope to everyone touched by cancer and working toward finding a cure, the Phillips County Relay for Life Committee announces the line-up of activities for the 2012 relay event.
Join in your community’s fight against cancer by participating in the Phillips County Relay for Life to be presented at a newly announced time – 6 p.m. Friday, April 20 - at the Central track in Helena-West Helena.
Leslie Humphrey, American Cancer Society community representative, said, “So many people and families continue to be touched by cancer each year.  Join us in this important community celebration as we work to make a difference for cancer patients everywhere.”
Money raised through corporate sponsorship for Relay for Life allows the American Cancer Society to expand support to cancer patients and expand educational and research programs. Among 2012 corporate sponsors are Blackhawk Warehouse and Leasing Co., Hickory Hill Pharmacy, Farm Credit Mid-south, and Malibu Farms.  With a unique format that runs till midnight, participants have pledged to walk in support of cancer research. Teams will be gathered together throughout the evening as fun activities like games, music, food, singing, ceremonies of celebration, and a touching luminary service are presented.
Starting at 6p.m., the opening ceremonies will kick off with a welcome, prayer, the singing of the National Anthem, and the presentation of the color guard. A triumphant victory walk by area cancer survivors, who will make the first lap together, will follow. All survivors are invited to share their courage with the community and start the event by leading the first lap. Acknowledging the kindness and services of those who care for cancer patients, a special caregiver lap will follow the survivor lap.
Team laps, great food and entertainment will then take place. The Phillips College team will be serving fried fish plates (including hushpuppies, fries & slaw), hamburger meals (including chips & drink), smoked sausage sandwich meals, and hotdog meals.
At 9 p.m., all relay and game activity will cease and hundreds of luminaries that have been purchased in honor of cancer survivors and in memory of those who have died will be lit. Following the luminary service, a host of family entertainment, games, and activities will resume, running till midnight.
“Please come out and show your support of our friends and loved ones who have been touched by cancer,” said Humphrey. “Make plans for a fun night of music, food, fun, and celebrating life.”
