The Trumann police chief has resigned after an investigative report accused him of stealing prescription drugs from the department's evidence room.

Trumann Mayor Sheila Walters says Chief Tony Rusher resigned Monday, shortly after the report was released.

Walters tells the Jonesboro Sun (http://is.gd/0Zn5oo ) that Rusher resigned over the phone.

The report, by former Arkansas State Police special agent Phil Carter, claims that Rusher admitted taking drugs that had been seized by the department. According to the report, Rusher said he only took pills for which he already had a prescription.

Rusher could not be reached for comment Tuesday.

Walters says a copy of the report has been forwarded to prosecutors to determine whether to file criminal charges.
