Ice-skating, of course, will be the main attraction at the first annual Helena on Ice scheduled Dec. 9-12. However, plans also are shaping up for a spectacular four days of Christmas music, food and fun in the Court Square Park.
Thanks to the efforts of the Helena-West Helena Advertising and Promotions Commission, All Year Sports will bring its own Super Glide synthetic ice rink for the event. Skates will be provided so that kids and adults can “glide” or “stumble” around the 40x40 rink.
Tickets are $5 per skater. Children under 5 may skate free when accompanied by a paying adult.
Opening ceremonies will get underway at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 9 with Mayor James Valley and incoming mayor Arnell Willis sharing the spotlight as master of ceremonies. The Delta Bridge Project will serve free holiday treats and provide a display showing the community’s successes during the past five years.
Special holiday events are slated for Thursday and Saturday. Several Santas will be on hand to listen to children’s Christmas wishes including Chris Richey, pastor, Delta Fellowship Church; Oscar Hoskins, city of Helena-West Helena street and sanitation department manager; Father Travis Frank, pastor, St. John’s Episcopal Church; and Rusty Porter, local attorney and actor fresh from his starring role in Helena Little Theater’s production of “Christmas Tuna.”
Children also will be able to ride the Helena-West Helena Fire Department’s Christmas Train around the park.
Several area choirs will provide Christmas music. On Thursday night, school choirs will begin singing at 5 p.m. The choirs include: J.F. Wahl Elementary, Beechcrest, Westside, Barton, KIPP and Central. Church choirs will perform on Saturday beginning at 3 p.m. They will include: New Haven, King Solomon, St. John’s Episcopal, St. Peter’s, First Baptist Youth Choir, Young Life and the PLM&D District Choir.
Tickets may be purchased at Helena National Bank, Cherry Street and West branches and Southern Bancorp at the Cherry Street and Plaza Street branches.
Businesses may sponsor tickets with a $25 donation or an entire school group for $200. Checks should be made payable to the Helena-West Helena Advertising and Promotion Commission. Tickets are available for private parties with proceeds going toward next year’s event.
