The state commission that disciplines judges has recommended that Circuit Judge L.T. Simes of Phillips County be removed from the bench because he violated judicial rules.
The Friday ruling will be forwarded to the Arkansas Supreme Court, which will make the final decision on Simes.
The opinion from the nine-member Arkansas Judicial Discipline and Disability Commission was written its vice chairman, Judge John Everett. The panel's chairman, Judge Leon Jamison, disagreed with the majority and says Simes should keep his position.
Simes was the target of a complaint for his handling of a suit that sought to reinstate a fired police chief. He sanctioned the then-mayor of West Helena and his attorney, which the commission says was improper.
