A recent gift to the Phillips Community College Foundation by the family of the late Michael “Rudy-Mike” Gilmore, of Helena-West Helena, has established a new scholarship to support Phillips College students each year.
Elijah and Jerlene Gilmore, of Helena-West Helena, have established the Michael Gilmore Memorial Scholarship in memory of their son. A graduate of Phillips Community College of the University of Arkansas (PCCUA), Gilmore, 24, was killed while a senior at Arkansas State University (ASU) in Jonesboro in April.
Gilmore attended school in the Helena-West Helena School District and graduated from Central High School in 2004 with honors. While in high school, he was a member of the JROTC, and the Central High School football and track teams.
In 2006, Gilmore enrolled at Phillips College where he received an Associate of Arts degree. While at PCCUA, he was employed as a mentor for Camp Run Around and GEAR UP and was always willing to help a participant in need.  He then enrolled at ASU where he was majoring in physical education and athletic training with plans to graduate in December of this year. Gilmore was acknowledged with an honorary degree from Arkansas State University during its spring 2010 graduation exercises.
Today, Gilmore is remembered as a fun-loving and outgoing person who always had a smile on his face and for his kind spirit and generosity.
The Michael Gilmore Memorial Scholarship provides $500 each fall and spring semester for two consecutive years for the recipient and is designed to assist male Central High School graduates in achieving their educational goals.
Applicants must have a 3.0 GPA or a minimum 21 ACT composite score in order to be eligible for the scholarship. Recipients must complete their course work at Phillips College with a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 each semester in order to keep the scholarship.
Anyone wishing to donate to the Gilmore Memorial Scholarship Fund may do so by sending a tax-exempt donation made payable to the Phillips Community College Foundation, in care of Rhonda St. Columbia, at P.O. Box 785, Helena, AR 72342 or by calling (870) 338-6474, ext. 1130.
