Funeral services for Mattie Lee Franklin will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 20, 2010 at the First Baptist Church at Midland Heights. Rev. L.T. Mapp will officiate. Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. today in the Robert Lee Brown Memorial Chapel.
Franklin was born Feb. 6, 1936 in Blytheville to the late Ulysses C Gates and the late Mattie Williams Gates.
She confessed a hope in Christ and was baptized at an early age at the Freedonia M.B. Church in Helena. After many years, she became a member of First Baptist Church of Midland Heights where she served as an usher, choir member, junior choir director and mother's board and as pastor's aid treasurer.
On Sept. 9, 1967, Mattie married Brother Benjamin Franklin in Helena.
Her son, Johnny Franklin, three brothers, James Gates Sr., Jeremiah B. Gates and Derell Sweet, preceded her in death.
She leaves to celebrate her precious memory, her husband, Benjamin Franklin; nine children, four daughters, Frankie (Leonard) Rockette of Walls, Miss., Shirley Lofton of Grand Rapids, Mich., Wade (Roy) Louis of Racine, Wis., Dorothy Smith of Minneapolis, Minn.; four sons, Milvin (Pat) Clark of Racine, Wis., Godrey Franklin of Minneapolis, Minn., Terry (Beth) Franklin of Minneapolis and Benjamin Franklin Jr., of Grand Rapids, Mich.; two brothers, Hosie Gates and Lloyd Gates of Helena-West Helena; a sister, Fannie Lee Taylor of Helena-West Helena; two sisters-in-law, Johnnie B. Franklin of Helena, Dorothy Phillips of Pine Bluff; 29 grandchildren; 68 great grandchildren and three great-great- grandchildren; and a large extended family of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
