James Barnes (Jim) Shackelford died Tuesday, Feb. 16, 2010 at his home in Helena-West Helena.

James Barnes (Jim) Shackelford died Tuesday, Feb. 16, 2010 at his home in Helena-West Helena. Born Jan. 10, 1952 in Pine Bluff to the late Bill and Dell Shackelford, Jim was a long time Helena resident and owner of Shackelford Machine Shop.
His skill as a tool and die maker and machinist kept farmers, chemical plants and marine interests running when parts needed repairing or replacing. Antique machines, particularly steam-run equipment, were of interest to him. His own shop included a lathe used to turn cannons for the Civil War. Jim salvaged machines from the old Helena Machine Shop, which had flooded, and restored them for use in his shop. The shop opened in the old Naval Reserve building, later moved to Helena Crossing and then Old Little Rock Road.
The Shackelford machine shop was a gathering place for Jim's friends. His many stories and the way he told them made people laugh until they cried. In spite of his health problems over the last years, he maintained friendships far and near. Everyone will miss Jim.
Graveside services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb.20, 2010 at Maple Hill Cemetery in Helena.
