The Barton-Lexa School Board has appointed Anthony Arnold to fill the unexpired term of Loyd Oxner who retired recently after 35 years on the board.
“Mr. Arnold will serve on the board until next (2010’s) school elections,” Superintendent Tom Wilson said following Arnold’s appointment.
Arnold, a chemical engineer with Helena Chemical since 1995, has a legacy with Barton. He played under the legendary Frank McCellan during the Bears’ 63-0 win streak in the late 1980s.
“We won four state championships (1986-1989) in a row,” Arnold recalled
Wednesday  after his appointment Tuesday night.
Arnold said he has volunteered his time with Barton athletics such as operating the scoreboard clock and the public address system.
A 1989 graduate of Barton, Arnold graduated from the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville in 1995 with a Bachelor of Science degree in chemical engineering.
His wife, Stephanie, is also a Barton graduate. The couple has two sons, Casey, who is in the fourth grade at Barton, and Jackson, who will enter kindergarten at Barton in the fall of 2010. Stephanie Arnold works at Phillips Community College of the University of Arkansas.
Arnold is also active with the Twin City Athletic Association coaching baseball at J.R. House Athletic Complex. He and Randy Smith led The Slammers through the 2009 season.
The Arnolds attend Fourth Street Baptist Church near Storm Creek Road in West Helena.
Arnold said he looked forward to serving on the school board.
“I have some big shoes to fill taking Mr. Oxner’s place. He did a very fine job all those years,” Arnold said.
   Wilson said of Arnold’s appointment:
“Mr. Arnold has been very active with the school system. He will be a real asset,” Wilson said.
