Marvell Academy’s Lady Eagles finished third in the Class 1A State Tournament Saturday night at Flowood, Miss.
    By advancing into Friday’s semifinals the Lady Eagles earned a spot in the overall state tournament that begins play today at Clinton, Miss.
   The girls took on Marshall Academy from Holly Springs, Miss. in a 10 a.m. game on the campus of Mississippi College.
   A win would put the Lady Eagles into the second round against Magnolia Heights.
    Central opens its baseball season at 4:30 p.m. today at Gene Bearden Stadium at Cleo Dunnings-North Helena Park.
   The stadium has under gone major modifications so fans should find the appearance enjoyable even if the temperatures are still nippy.
   The Cougars will take on Little Rock McClellan. The Cougars face a rough schedule with seven of their 11 scheduled games on the road.
  Central travels to Palestine-Wheatley March 2 before returning home for a March 3 contest against Barton.
   Marvell Academy opens its baseball season Wednesday at Holly Springs, Miss. New head coach Tyler Smith reports that only 11 players turned out for baseball, leaving him with no margin for injury.
   DeSoto opens its baseball season March 6 at Marianna Lee.
    DeSoto will rely on three seniors – D.J. Mallard, Dalton Woodyard and Ryan Holt – along with junior Cody Manning and sophomore Dylan Cruz to carry the team through their District 1A schedule.
   All home games will begin at 4 p.m. The field is on the east end of the campus.
