A man unknown to those attending an outdoor wedding Saturday in rural Pope County opened fire with a pistol, injuring four people, including the newly married bride and groom, police said.
Police arrested Patrick Paul Duvall, 29, after outraged wedding-goers chased him into a Russellville restaurant parking lot, said Pope County sheriff's Lt. Aaron DuVall. Duvall, no relation to the sheriff's lieutenant, faces four felony counts of first-degree battery and a felony charge of vehicle theft after the shooting.
"Apparently, there was an outdoor wedding yesterday and a subject was there who was not associated with the wedding at all," DuVall said. "No one knew him."
Two of those injured in the shooting were taken to a local hospital, while two others were flown by helicopter to Little Rock-area hospitals. DuVall said one of the injured has already been released.
DuVall declined to identify those injured, but said the bride and groom remained in the hospital Sunday night.
The wedding took place north of Dover along Piney Creek, an area DuVall described as often used by picnickers and families wanting to take a swim. About 50 people, including children, attended the outdoor wedding, which was just wrapping up when Duvall approached with a 9 mm pistol.
"For some reason we don't know yet, he opened fire," DuVall said. "We were very fortunate no one else was injured."
The sheriff's lieutenant said Duvall, of Russellville, had made a statement to detectives that he had yet to see. He said investigators continued to interview witnesses Sunday.
Deputies say Duvall will remain in the Pope County jail at least until a bond hearing Wednesday morning. Jailers said Duvall had been visited by an attorney, but declined to release any further information. A telephone number listed in Duvall's name in Russellville could not be found Sunday night.
